As we move into fall, and all of the fun that comes with it (can we get a cheer for kids getting back on the school bus?!), it seems appropriate to share some news and updates from your favorite college.
Skidmore had a record number of applications for the Class of 2017−8300, the largest in its history. The school awarded more than $39 million in student aid for the upcoming academic year. Skidmore's programming is enhanced by major awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New World Foundation, David United World College Scholars Program, The Andy Warhol Foundation and others.
More exciting−in a Newsweek poll, Skidmore was ranked #9 of the 25 happiest schools in the nation, and 88% of the students would pick the same school again. These stats take me back to our years there, and what we all knew then, and know now: students love being at Skidmore.
Were you among the 10,000 alumni, parents, and friends who made gifts to Skidmore in the 2012-2013 fiscal year? Annual fund gifts go to direct support of learning in labs, classrooms, studios and beyond. Endowed gifts strengthen the College long-term, while generating funds for student aid, facilities, and other many needs.
Civic engagement and the public service efforts of students and faculty have helped earn the College national recognition. Skidmore has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the second year in a row.
In addition, a number of students had incredible opportunities during spring break, studying culture and commerce in Ireland and ecology in Costa Rica, and performing service for an Urban Project in New York City, a Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge in Florida, and a MEDLIFE-sponsored health services effort in Ecuador.
As you probably already know, Skidmore students have become even more internationally oriented than we were, reaching out to help and understand others. We should all be so proud to be alumni of Skidmore!
I hope this letter finds you all happy and enjoying the start of fall. Remember our freshman orientation in August 1991? It was the beginning of incredible friendships and, oh, the memories....
