March 2013
Hi Class of '55 Skiddies:
Remember when we
were called that? I especially recall the nickname in our Freshman
year. I think it must have worn off in later years, thank goodness, and
whatever made me think of it now? Maybe as I was trying to recall our
good times as I was composing this letter. I know you'll all be as pleased as I was to learn that the students admitted to the Class of 2016 last fall came from 33 states
and the District of Columbia, as well as 34 countries. This class is
the most diverse in the College's history. 36 started their Skidmore
experience at the College's London First Year Experience Program. (Where
have I been? I must go online to check that out. Please join me there
if you are as in the dark as I am.)
Skidmore has awarded more
than $36 million in student aid for the 2012-13 academic year. Nearly
42% of the Class of 2016 received aid. More than 10,000 alumni, parents
and friends made gifts to the college, totaling $21 million during the
2011-12 fiscal year and 82 students received funding for summer
internships with projects ranging from teaching English in the slums of
New Delhi to studying advanced archeological techniques. Some also
studied the European Union's fiscal crises.
Newsweek, in their annual
polling of "College rankings 2012: 25 Happiest Schools," ranked
Skidmore #9. It also reflected that 80% of Skidmore students would
choose the same school again and showed a 95% student retention rate.
The civic engagement and public service efforts of the faculty and
students have helped garner the College national recognition. Skidmore
has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service
Honor Roll for the second consecutive year.
As part of Skidmore’s
ongoing effort to provide greater support to recent graduates and alumni
in their career development and transitions, the Career Development
Center welcomes Jenna Hartwell as the new Associate Director of Alumni
Career Development. In this role, Jenna provides individual career
counseling to Skidmore graduates and works with alumni to create
networking connections for current students and alums. She also
coordinates regional, off-campus career development events for alumni.
Prior to working at Skidmore, Jenna served as the Coordinator for
Student and Alumni Career Services at Wheelock College where she
successfully increased the office’s visibility and services for their
alumni population. Originally from Amherst, MA, Jenna received her BS in
Social Science (History Focus) at Cazenovia College and her M.Ed. in
Counselor Education (College Counseling) at North Carolina State
University. Alumni interested in working with Jenna may contact her by
calling the Career Development Center at (518) 580-5790.
We may have aged, but our College remains as pertinent
to our world as ever. We have a lot to be proud of as alumnae of
Skidmore!
Best wishes,
Sue
