Dear Classmates,

On Friday, April 19, 2013 six 1959 classsmates, Roe Schainman Halper, Sue Clark Jorgensen, Maryann Bruno McCrea, Bev Sanders Payne, Sheila DeNadal Salvo, and Janet Lucas Whitman met on campus to attend the 25th Annual Celebration of Skidmore College Scholars and Donors. This is an opportunity for scholarship students to meet with their donors and to share their Skidmore experiences with them. Our class presently sponsors four students.

The group first met at lunch in a private room off the main cafeteria. Our class recipients, senior Troy Scott and sophomore Elana Scaglia, Roe's granddaughter, were happy to tell us what they are doing this year.  Devany Baez, our junior scholar, is studying in Italy this semester and therefore, didn't attend. Freshman Camilla Bushy made a brief appearance since she had to go home to attend a funeral. However, we had a couple of fill in guests - Emma Harris '16, Sheila's granddaughter and Brooks Robinson '15, Nancy Poppelwell Robinson's granddaughter.

The evening dinner program, hosted by President Philip Glotzbach, presented past and present scholarship receipients as well as information pertaining to Skidmore's financial aid. Presently, Skidmore gives $37.5 million in financial aid, an increase of 250% since 2003. The college's comprehensive fee (tuition, room and board, etc.) is $57,308 for 2012-13. The grant portion of each package averages $31,900. Nearly 42% of the freshman class received aid this year. Today many students leave college with large debts.

According to President Glotzbach, Skidmore's goal is to have no one leave college with a debt larger than $23,000 after four years of college.  As of June 30, 2012, Skidmore's endowment was $283.1 million.  Compared to other colleges of comparable size, Skidmore's endowment is small. For example, endowments of other colleges are: Smith ($1,409.7 billion), Vassar ($902.3 million), Colgate ($687.3 million), Mt. Holyoke ($582.6 million), Trinity ($422.5 million), Dickinson ($325.7 million), Union ($316.8 million). The fact that Skidmore gives so much of its budget to financial aid indicates that aid is a priority to the college.

To end the evening, the college community was invited to attend one of three programs: an orchestral and choir concert, a dance program or a show, " The Barber of Fleet Street."

Thanks!
