March 2013
Dear Classmates:
Welcome to another new year one that has already been full of surprises. Here in New Jersey we have had many including Hurricane Sandy, and I’m sure most of our class has also been affected by unpredictable weather events! Sandy certainly left us all stunned. What a winter. Now we’re heading into spring, but the last few months have given us snow and rain with very cold and windy conditions. It has reminded me of our walks to 8 am classes during Saratoga winters!
Now is the time to think of a family trip. My visit to last year’s Reunion was a wonderful surprise not only seeing classmates but seeing what Skidmore has become in the last 50 years. The number of events that are held on campus everything from art and music to sports, special workshops and camps could keep a person busy all year. I found that the new Murray-Aikins Dining Hall was unbelievable, and features every kind of food station you can imagine. Skidmore’s home page – www.skidmore.edu – is the place to find out about all upcoming events and programs. So take a look and plan a trip to Saratoga. There is so much to see and do.
Each year my twin and I plan an adventurous place to visit. We have been all over the world. Next October we’re heading to Madagascar, a country full of so many rare flora and fauna or wildlife. Anyone want to join us?
You’ll be hearing from a Class Agent asking for your help in trying to get our class participation up even higher. It doesn’t matter what the amount is, just that you contribute something. Our gifts really help to provide more scholarships so Skidmore can attract students from all walks of life.
As part of Skidmore’s ongoing effort to provide greater support to recent graduates and alumni in their career development and transitions, the Career Development Center welcomes Jenna Hartwell as the new Associate Director of Alumni Career Development. In this role, Jenna provides individual career counseling to Skidmore graduates and works with alumni to create networking connections for current students and alums. She also coordinates regional, off-campus career development events for alumni. Prior to working at Skidmore, Jenna served as the Coordinator for Student and Alumni Career Services at Wheelock College, where she successfully increased the office’s visibility and services for their alumni population. Originally from Amherst, MA, Jenna received her BS in Social Science (History Focus) at Cazenovia College and her M.Ed. in Counselor Education (College Counseling) at North Carolina State University. Alumni interested in working with Jenna may contact her by calling the Career Development Center at (518) 580-5790.
I hope you all enjoyed the new Class Directory. What a help to have all our names, addresses, and e-mails together in one book! This can be helpful during the holiday times and when planning trips.
Please send Becky Beckwith Ballantine all your news for her Scope column. Her email address is: bbbalex@verizon.net. Not only does she enjoy hearing from you all, but we all want to know what our friends are doing.
Take care and keep active! That’s the best way to keep up with your grand kids. (I’m still chasing all sizes of balls and officiating field hockey for the last 20 years.)
Hope
